This terraced Edwardian home had loads of promise and potential, but the new owners needed to address dampness issues as well as dated finishings. A major renovation transformed the home into a light and bright space with a unique sense of style.

First home buyers

Nico and Dario were in the process of closing on a three-bedroom terraced house when they sent out an SOS to Refresh Renovations. They had not planned to begin renovating so soon after purchasing the home, but the results of a water leak in the dining room needed to be addressed as quickly as possible. As new homeowners, renovating was unfamiliar territory, so they wanted to know more about the benefits of working with a company like Refresh and to see what was possible.

Local Refresh Consultant Sam Jalil arranged a free initial meeting with the pair to better understand their needs and answer questions they had. Sam explained that as their dedicated consultant, he would take care of every element of the renovation process, from the design and costing stage right through to the final delivery. No work would begin until they were completely comfortable with the plans and budget, and because Refresh offers a custom service, he would deliver solutions tailored to their needs, lifestyle, and budget. This seamless (and stress-free!) service was exactly what the pair needed, so they welcomed Sam on board and began the exciting planning stage.

Design and Costings

Nico and Dario’s Edwardian home was full of promise and potential but had several issues that needed attention as well as cosmetic fixes. The dining room leak meant that there were dampness issues to remedy, new insulation and electrical work would need to be installed, and the couple also wanted to straighten the angles of an arch between the living room and dining room. A new bathroom was on the wish list, as well as a loft conversion, and lightening and brightening the space with fresh paint and hardwood floors. Sam set to work with his designer to create a custom concept that would not only future proof the home, but also stamp Nico and Dario’s style on the space. Old and new elements would complement each other and create a unique look that suited both the couple, and the home.

Transformation Work Begins

With detailed plans and costings approved by Nico and Dario, Sam assembled his expert team to begin the exciting transformation, including painters, plasterers, electricians, tilers, builders, and plumbers.

The dining room was stripped to assess water damage, and the team was then able to treat the rising damp, reinforce wood joists, and install insulation. New electrical work was installed while the walls were exposed, and then plastering and drylining gave the space a clean base for fresh paint. Upstairs, a loft was converted into a handy office space with a convertible futon for guests, and throughout the home dated carpet was removed and new flooring was laid. The large bathroom also underwent a radical transformation with bold blue subway tiles, and a mix of heritage and modern fixtures.

Fresh and Future Proofed

Nico and Dario now have a beautiful home with their own signature style. The large bathroom feels like a show piece, with a fun and fresh blue subway tile wrapping around the room, vessel top vanity, luxurious rain shower, and a claw foot slipper tub giving a nod to the home’s heritage.

The dining room is now free of leak issues, and beautiful wood flooring, white baseboards and grey wall paint provide the perfect base for artwork. Upstairs, the simple loft conversion has created a handy spare room for guests or a quiet workspace, and both sets of staircases in the house have also received a refresh.

Final Words

From dated and damp to fresh and fabulous – Sam delivered a fabulous renovation that transformed Nico and Dario’s Edwardian home into a stylish and modern sanctuary. The warm wood flooring and neutral tones created a light and bright space that was the perfect base for fun splashes of colour. By addressing insulation, wiring, and dampness issues, the home now not only looks fantastic, but is warmer, dryer, and safer. Sam loves the outcome. “This was a wonderful transformation. The old and new elements of the home complement each other and it has a warm and cosy feel that Nico and Dario love.”
