Bathrooms, and showers in particular, can be a veritable bag of surprises when it comes to replacing or renovating. Unfortunately for many people they end up with a nasty surprise during the removal of existing fittings. Often what starts out as a simple replacement of a shower turns into the need for a complete renovation. Shower enclosures have come a long way over the years with many manufacturers now offering a ‘waterproof’ guarantee when their products are installed by accredited ‘shower installers’, giving extra peace of mind.
It is always the best idea to get professional advice from a registered plumber especially when replacing bathroom fittings as it is often not a simple change out of products. In most situations where you are replacing ‘like with like’ and not moving water supplies or waste pipes a consent is not required. However, if you were to change the type of shower from acrylic to tile shower you may need to get a consent. Always check with your local council for advice.
Doing your homework is a very important part of the process as is having a contingency budget. The internet, home magazines and show homes are all good sources for inspiration. Measure your bathroom, including the positions of doors, windows and existing bathroom fittings. Visit the showroom consultants at your local Chesters Plumbing and Bathroom Centre who will be able to guide you through the products that are available to fit your situation.
There are a variety of different shower options available including standard acrylic cubicles, combinations of acrylic tray with tiles walls and complete tile showers. At this point you will have an idea about what the products are going to costs. Remember, if you choose a tile shower option you may need to get consent and have the tiled area waterproofed.
Your bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house when you are selling so be sure to keep this in mind if you are replacing fittings to put the house on the market. Contact a plumber for pricing and advice on installing the products you have selected. If you are considering renovation the whole bathroom you may want to contact a renovation company who can project manage the whole process. Be sure to purchase any products from a reputable company and that the products do offer a warranty.
