5 Reasons you should convert your loft in North London

Feeling cramped? A loft conversion could be the solution for you! Whether you need more space for the kids, a home office, or even a personal gym, converting an underutilised loft is a fantastic solution to your space problems.

What is a loft conversion?

The clue is in the question! A loft conversion converts (changes) your existing loft into a space that is better suited to your needs. So instead of housing old boxes and clutter, it becomes a much-needed extra bedroom, play area, office space, or home library – the options are endless! (And if you’re looking to sell and wondering if loft conversions add value, then typically – the answer is yes!)

What are the different types of loft conversions?

There are several different types of loft conversions, and the one that will suit you will depend on how much space you need, your existing house design, roof height, and your budget. Our Renovation Specialists are experts when it comes to loft conversions, so can walk you through the different options, the cost of a loft conversion, and help you decide which loft conversion ideas are best for you! Some of the main loft conversion styles are:

Dormer

A dormer loft conversion is the most popular style in the UK. The back existing slope of the roof is removed and built up vertically from the rear elevation. It can turn a cramped attic into a light and open space.

Mansard

Typically located at the rear of the property, a Mansard loft conversion has a flat roof with a slight fall to allow for water runoff, while the face of the Mansard slopes back at 72 degrees creating a distinctive design.

Velux

In this conversion, the roofline remains unaltered, but Velux windows are used and allow natural sunlight to shine through the new space. This is one of the most cost-effective and easiest ways to create additional space and requires much less building work.

Hip to Gable

This conversion increases loft space immensely, often allowing space for a new stairwell. The bottom of the side slope is built up vertically and extended to create a gable end. (Not suitable for mid-terraced homes.)

Piggyback

The Piggyback life allows you to gain significant head height at the slope of the roof, by removing the existing roof and raising the perimeter walls approximately 1.3m. The new pitched roof is then built on top, creating much more height and a practical living space.

What are the benefits of a loft conversion?

Space, light, privacy, increased property value – converting your loft has huge benefits. We have helped dozens of homeowners around North London achieve their renovation goals and improve their lifestyle. Some of the key benefits of loft conversion include:

Increasing Property Value

How much value does a loft conversion add? Well, that depends on your home and your area but converting your loft is an almost sure-fire way to increase the value of your property. Bonus space – whatever form it may take – is always a plus that can increase your home equity or translate to a higher sale price when the time comes.

Quick and Easy

Unlike home extensions, loft conversions are relatively quick and easy making the cost of a loft conversion more appealing to many. Our Renovation Consultants will take care of any required council paperwork, too, so you don’t have to lift a finger!

Something for Everyone

There are multiple loft conversion styles, so there is bound to be something that suits your needs, tastes, and budget. From the popular dormer conversions, to the quick and cost-effective Velux plans, there will be a design that is right for you!

Storage Space

No, we don’t mean a dark and cramped attic. Converting your loft can deliver much needed storage space that is actually user friendly. From Christmas decorations to seasonal clothing, a loft conversion can help you declutter your home and make your belongings accessible. Loft conversion storage can transform your home!

Living Space

New bedroom? Play area for the kids? Home office? Personal yoga studio? You’re only limited by your imagination! A loft conversion can give you what you and your family really need!
